Compact Power Source (2016)

Under a program sponsored by the US Navy, DTI is designing high-power compact charging converters for the Electromagnetic Railgun (EMRG) Program.

Military pulsed-power programs, including the Navy Electromagnetic Railgun require cost-effective, extremely power-dense supplies to quickly and efficiently charge large capacitor banks with capacities exceeding 50 MJ. Commercially available power supplies may be impractical for this application due to their low power densities.

DTI's compact power supply will safely charge capacitors to store projectile-launch energy, eliminating significant stores of explosive propellants aboard Navy ships and in the supply-chain. High efficiency and power-density reduce the weight, volume, and power requirements needed to support the system.Fast charging allows high rate firing, providing a flexible response to threats.

The Navy Electromagnetic Railgun requires rapid capacitor charging with minimum volume and power consumption. This unit provides a power density exceeding 2.5 Megawatts per cubic meter - over six times that of existing commercially available supplies - with 97 percent efficiency. This greatly reduces volume requirements for the overall system and reduces ship power needs. Cost per watt is projected to be significantly lower than that of state-of-the-art systems.
